Beer_nerd will be up and running next Monday (Sept 22) with a brand-new look and a post about Oktoberfest. Look for updates every Monday from there on out, with occasional reviews.
OG: Original gravity. A measure of the density of the beer before fermentation. By definition, water has a gravity of 1. Wort ABV will be higher due to dissolved sugars.
FG: Final Gravity. A measure of the density of the beer after fermentation. Together with the OG is used to calculate ABV. Pure alcohol has a gravity of .79.
ABV: Alcohol by volume. A measure of the percentage of alcohol in the beer. Beers can range from 3-20% or higher.
IBU: International bittering units. A measure of how bitter the beer is due to the presence of alpha acids from hops.
