Beer Guideline Definitions
Original gravity. A measure of the density of the beer
fermentation. By definition, water has a gravity of 1. Wort ABV will be higher due to dissolved sugars.
Final Gravity. A measure of the density of the beer
fermentation. Together with the OG is used to calculate ABV. Pure alcohol has a gravity of .79.
Alcohol by volume. A measure of the percentage of alcohol in the beer. Beers can range from 3-20% or higher.
International bittering units. A measure of how bitter the beer is due to the presence of alpha acids from hops.
Standard reference method.
A measure of the color of the beer.
4 is very light, 13 is amber, and 70 is very dark.
